Being of legal age
You must be at least 18 to sign a credit agreement. Some banks also set a maximum age at the end of the loan, often linked to retirement age.
Living or working in Switzerland
Swiss nationals and holders of a C or B permit can in principle obtain a loan. Cross-border commuters with a G permit can also borrow from some banks, under specific conditions.
For B permits, the length of residence in Switzerland and the permit's expiry date are taken into account.
Having a regular income
Your income must allow you to repay the loan while covering your day-to-day expenses. Banks generally require you to have been in your job for a certain time, outside any probation period.
Having no ongoing debt enforcement
An extract from the debt enforcement register is required. Open debt enforcement proceedings or certificates of unpaid debt generally lead to a refusal.
Having a good credit history
Banks consult the ZEK, the Swiss credit information centre, and the IKO, the consumer credit information centre. Significant late payments or unpaid loans are recorded there.
