Insufficient borrowing capacity
This is the most common reason. If your budget does not allow you to repay the amount requested within the legal framework, the bank must refuse. A smaller amount or consolidating existing loans can sometimes solve the problem.
Debt enforcement or a ZEK entry
Ongoing debt enforcement, certificates of unpaid debt or payment incidents recorded with the ZEK generally lead to a refusal.
Permit or length of employment
A permit that is about to expire, a recent arrival in Switzerland or a job still in its probation period can block an application with some banks.
Other common reasons
Other factors can weigh on the decision.
- Irregular income or income that is hard to prove
- Too many ongoing loans or leases
- An incomplete file
- The bank's own internal criteria
What to do after a refusal
Avoid sending applications to several banks. Contact us: we identify the reason for the refusal and tell you whether another bank may accept your file, or what needs to improve before a new application.
